The meeting took place within Prime Minister Vlad Filat's official visit to Brussels on 23-26 March. Attending the event was Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Iurie Leanca.
The prime minister said that the modernization of the judiciary and domestic affairs sector are key commitments assumed by the Moldovan government. Vlad Filat thanked the European Commission for its support and advice provided to Moldova to meet a string of objectives, stressing the importance of this assistance for the continuation of reforms.
The prime minister reviewed the situation in the judiciary and domestic affairs sector. He said that the government started to reform the police, combat corruption, remove torture and combat human trafficking.
Filat also briefed the EU official about actions undertaken on the European integration path. The prime minister specified that the Moldovan citizens are European citizens, who deserve the same rights as the EU ones.
The prime minister said that Moldova wants very much to benefit from the liberalized visa regime. He stressed that a string of actions are being taken to this end, such as the introduction of biometric passports starting from January 2011 and the launch of additional measures to efficiently manage the situation on the border.
Cecilia Malmstrom welcomed the government's delegation to Brussels, emphasizing that the European Union is willing to support Moldova's efforts on the European integration path.
The commissioner showed confidence in the fact that the dialogue on the liberalization of the visa regime for Moldova will be launched on 15 June 2010.
Cecilia Malmstrom wished the prime minister and his team much success, stressing that the reforms started by the government are necessary.
At the end, the prime minister invited the European commissioner to visit Moldova. |
