A current meeting on the promotion of the Moldova-EU Political Dialogue was held in Brussels on 4 May. Moldova's delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign and European Integration Minister Natalia Gherman.
The sides exchanged opinions on Moldova's domestic evolutions, relations with the EU, as well as the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict.
The EU representatives took note of the Moldovan authorities' commitment to consult the Venice Commission experts on the issue of amending Article 78 of Moldova's constitution (on the presidential election mechanism). The European Commission welcomed the Moldovan government's efforts to implement the reforms. Also, the EU representatives praised changes in terms of media freedom in Moldova.
As concerns ties between Moldova and the EU, the sides discussed the progress made to fulfill the commitments assumed at the Moldova-EU Cooperation Council on 21 December 2009. The sides praised the impressive dynamic of negotiations on an association agreement. Early next June, the European Commission will send a mission to Chisinau to assess Moldova's preparation for talks on a comprehensive free trade zone. The EU representatives took note of the first round of negotiations on an agreement on geographic indexes. They also hailed Moldova's accession to the European Energy Community. The European side informed that the Moldova-EU dialogue on the liberalisation visa regime will start on 15 June 2010. The sides discussed the outcomes of the first meeting within the Moldova-EU Dialogue on Human Rights. The Moldovan delegation expressed wish to start the process of accession to the Single European Sky, which will contribute to the liberalization of Moldova's air market.
The sides exchanged visions on the Transnistrian conflict settlement process. They stressed the important role of each of the sides in the resumption of negotiations in the 5+2 format - the only recognized format within which a viable solution to the Transnistrian conflict may be identified. The sides expressed concern about frequent infringements of human rights in the Transnistrian region, and respectively, the increase in complaints submitted to the European Court of Human Rights.
In Brussels, Natalia Gherman met Director for Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia at the European Commission Gunnar Wiegand. The officials discussed preparations for the third round of talks on the association agreement, due in Chisinau on 7-8 June 2010. The sides also coordinated the agenda of a visit to Chisinau by EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule, due on 14-15 May 2010. |
